Dental braces are a device used in dentistry / orthodontics to correct alignment of teeth and their position with regard to bite. Braces are often used to correct malocclusions such as underbites, overbites, cross bites and open bites, or crooked teeth and various other flaws of teeth and jaws, whether cosmetic or structural.

Most of the time Braces are placed to straighten crooked teeth or for closing gaps in the front teeth. Besides the fact that these crooked teeth and gaps look bad and need correction for better appearance, correcting this fault is also necessary as malaligned teeth also lead to more severe dental problems if left untreated.

Like if you have crooked teeth its is more difficult to keep them clean and this leads to bad breath and cavities and may also lead to early loss of the teeth due to gum disease.

Extra gaps in the teeth don’t allow the teeth to get extra support from the adjacent teeth during chewing and hence get weaker / loosen faster than normal again leading to early loss.

A well aligned arch of teeth is easier to clean and keep cavity free and also best suited to withstand all the forces during chewing besides just looking good.

At Smile Dental Care braces are placed and the treatment is done by a specialist in the field known as an Orthodontist.

The orthodontist looks at your teeth and may suggest a couple of X-rays to determine whether the malalignment is only in the teeth, or the bones which support the teeth or a combination of the two. Depending on the X-rays and study models a carefully planned treatment option is devised and put forth to you.

How do braces work?

Braces usually consist of a bracket bonded on the tooth and a wire running through the bracket.
Teeth are moved by applying variable pressure on the teeth by tightening /loosening the wire as required.
The wire is twisted and turned in a planned and systemic manner so as to apply a desired amount of regulated pressure on the particular tooth in a certain direction causing the tooth to move in that direction.
This pressure is altered at regular intervals causing the teeth to move in the desired position.

What is the right age for Braces?

There is no upper age limit for putting braces, they can be placed any time, whenever you want .
The ideal age for the treatment though is early between 9yrs -15yrs as at that time the bone is not completely hardened and tooth movement is easier and faster.

How long does the treatment take?

The length of time is determined mainly by the amount of discrepancy and type of braces used.
Usually though the entire treatment takes between 1 ½ - 2 yrs to complete with check ups once / twice a month.

What are the different types of braces?

Braces are of many different types.
Mainly from the patients point of view these can be divided into

1. Metal braces
2. Ceramic Braces
3. Lingual braces
4. Invisible braces

This is a broad classification on the esthetics only and they are further divided depending upon the design of the brackets and wires. Which braces are suitable for a particular case can only be evaluated after looking at the patient’s teeth and X-ray’s.

What special care do I have to take if I get braces ?

Once you have braces on your teeth, a few precautions need to be taken to maintain hygiene and protect the braces and teeth.
Extra care has to be taken during cleaning / brushing and special tooth brushes are to be used.
A fluoridated mouth-wash has to be used regularly to avoid and cavities etc.
Avoid biting into very hard food-stuff, Break it into smaller pieces and chew it rather than biting into it directly.
Fruits etc should be cut and eaten.
Sticky foodstuff like chewing gum, Chikki, éclairs are to be avoided during the course of the treatment.
