DENTAL FILLINGS

What are dental fillings?

Whenever a tooth gets decayed, the best method of treatment is to remove the decayed part and prevent further damage to the tooth. After removal of the decayed / Dead portion of the tooth, some sort of filling material is used to close the gap left behind, hence the term Filling is used to explain this process of restoring the lost tooth structure back.

Remember that the aim in this is removal of the decayed part and the filling is just the effect to close the gap and restore the tooth to normal shape size and contour.

What are types of fillings?

Fillings are various types depending on the part of the tooth the filling has to replace and the size of the defect it has to cove. In each of this also there are many different materials, each having one advantage over the other. Hence fillings cannot be generalized as just one type of filling but a good experienced dentist will be able to select the right filling for your particular case.

For example, for a cavity in the molar a filling with high strength is required which can take all the chewing forces without breaking or cracking. Even if the color is a bit mis matched the functional restoration is prime importance. On the other hand, for cavity in the front tooth through the filling needs to be strong it has to have a high polish ability so that the shade and color and gloss can be matched to the adjacent toot as best as possible. Yet again in a milk tooth (Child tooth) maybe we would prefer a fluoride releasing filling which will fight with the sweets abuse and is good enough if it lasts 3-4yrs. As the tooth will fall of by then. So, the filling which best fits the situation depends on a lot of factors and you may have2 different types of filling on 2 different teeth done at the same time.

What if I Don't get the filling done?

Remember that the tooth is not a self-healing part of our body. Once a cavity (Hole) is formed it will accumulate more food and that will lead to the cavity becoming deeper and bigger with time There is no way that the cavity will heal itself with time and if you wait it out it may heal. Cavities will just worsen with time and will eventually cause help necrosis and lead to a Root Canal Treatment or even extraction.

Remember that the aim in this is removal of the decayed part and the filling is just the effect to close the gap and restore the tooth to normal shape size and contour.

Composite fillings

Advantages :
1. Requires less drilling and removal of good tooth structure .So if you have a small pit cavity only that small bad patch of tooth is removed and remaining tooth is preserved
2. No Mercury is used so chances of mercury toxicity are none
3. Non Metallic so sensitivity to hot and cold is less / none as compared to silver which is a metallic filling
4. Bonds to the tooth structure so holds the entire tooth together and doesn’t cause stress fractures
5. Esthetic and looks good as it is tooth coloured

Disadvantages :
1. Requires more training and expertise to place Composite fillings
2. More expensive than Silver
3. Requires absolute dry field to place and isolation is of utmost importance, so in case of last teeth in patients who salivate more it requires elaborate isolation procedures

There are many other types of filling materials too like Glass ionomer, Compomers Gold, Sometimes inlays etc. These have specific purposes and may be used in some cases.
